WB HS Result 2026 merit list shows strong dominance of boys, with only 8 girls among 64 students featured in the top ten rankings statewide.

The release of the West Bengal Higher Secondary Result 2026 has sparked a fresh debate in academic circles after the state merit list revealed a striking gender imbalance. Out of 64 students who secured places in the top ten rankings, as many as 56 are boys, while only 8 are girls — highlighting a clear male dominance in this year’s race for top scores despite female candidates outnumbering boys in the overall examination.

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education declared the results on Thursday, announcing an overall pass percentage of 91.23%. More than 6.26 lakh students appeared for the examination this year, out of which over 5.71 lakh candidates successfully passed.

East Midnapore emerged as the top-performing district with a pass percentage of 94.19%, continuing its strong academic performance in the state.

Topping the merit list this year is Adrit Pal of Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission, who secured 496 marks and claimed the first rank in the state.

The second position was jointly secured by Jishnu Kundu, Ritabrata Nath and Oitijhya Pachhal, each scoring 495 marks.

Five students shared the third rank with 494 marks each. They are Debapriya Maji, Tanmoy Mondal, Soumya Roy, Shubhayan Mondal and Pritam Ballav.

The fourth position was jointly held by Aritrakumar Chakraborty, Golam Faisal, Arkadyuti Dhar and Chandrachur Sen, all of whom scored 493 marks.

At the fifth rank, six students secured 492 marks each — Megha Majumdar, Tridev Chakraborty, Srijan Parichha, Priyanshu Mukhopadhyay, Swarnabh Khatua and Soumik Dutta. Among them, Megha Majumdar stands out as one of the few female candidates prominently featured in the merit rankings.

This year’s examination was conducted under the semester system for the first time in West Bengal Higher Secondary history. The board held examinations across 15 language subjects and 16 vocational disciplines, with students from 6,837 schools participating statewide.

Interestingly, while the total number of female candidates exceeded male candidates by nearly 66,000, their representation in the top merit positions remained significantly lower. The contrast has already become a major talking point among educators, students and academic observers.

Experts believe the data opens up a larger discussion on performance patterns, examination pressure and educational trends among students. While girls have consistently shown strong overall participation and success rates in board examinations over the years, this year’s merit list has tilted heavily in favour of male candidates.

The sharp difference between overall female participation and merit-list representation is now prompting conversations about academic competition, access to support systems and performance dynamics under the newly introduced semester-based examination structure.

As the debate continues, the WB HS Result 2026 has not only become a story of academic achievement but also a reflection of evolving trends within Bengal’s education system.
