The sudden hospitalisation of the outspoken TMC leader has triggered anxiety among his followers, particularly in Kamarhati, considered his political stronghold. Despite the Trinamool Congress facing setbacks in several parts of the state in the recent Assembly elections, Madan Mitra successfully retained his seat from Kamarhati, once again proving his strong grassroots connect.

Known for his colourful public persona and unconventional campaigning style, Mitra remained one of the most talked-about political figures during the election season. From singing songs during campaign events to selling jhalmuri on the streets while canvassing for votes, the veteran leader frequently grabbed headlines with his unique approach to public outreach.

He also remained in the spotlight on polling day, continuing his trademark style of direct voter engagement. Over the years, Madan Mitra has built a reputation as one of the Trinamool Congress’ most recognisable faces, blending political aggression with mass appeal.

Mitra’s political journey has seen several dramatic highs and lows. He first contested from Bishnupur East in 2006 before shifting to Kamarhati during the landmark 2011 Assembly elections that brought Mamata Banerjee to power in West Bengal.

In 2014, he was arrested in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam and spent nearly 21 months in jail before securing bail in September 2016. He contested again from Kamarhati that year but lost the election. In 2019, the Trinamool fielded him in the Bhatpara bypoll, where he was defeated by Pawan Singh, son of BJP leader Arjun Singh.

However, Mitra staged a political comeback in the 2021 Assembly elections by winning from Kamarhati. He retained the constituency again in the 2026 elections, reaffirming his continued influence in the region.
