With Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several NDA chief ministers in attendance, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term, marking another major political milestone for the BJP-led alliance in the Northeast. The grand swearing-in ceremony in Guwahati turned into a strong show of political unity, with West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari praising Himanta’s leadership and highlighting Assam’s role in strengthening the BJP’s eastern India strategy.
Speaking after arriving in Guwahati, Suvendu Adhikari referred to Himanta Biswa Sarma as his “big brother” and publicly acknowledged the Assam Chief Minister’s support during political campaigns in West Bengal. Suvendu said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming eastern India into a powerful growth corridor would be achieved through coordinated efforts between Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Sikkim and Tripura.

The swearing-in ceremony witnessed the presence of top BJP leaders and NDA allies, underlining the growing political importance of the Northeast in national politics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several Union ministers attended the event alongside chief ministers from NDA-ruled states.
Along with Himanta Biswa Sarma, several ministers also took oath in the new Assam cabinet. BJP leaders Rameswar Teli, Charan Boro and Ajanta Neog were sworn in as ministers. Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, a key ally in the BJP-led coalition, also joined the ministry.
This marks the BJP’s third consecutive term in Assam, reflecting the party’s continued dominance in the state. Sarma, who emerged as one of the BJP’s strongest faces in the Northeast, has played a significant role in expanding the party’s influence across the region. Before Sarma, Sarbananda Sonowal had served as Assam Chief Minister and is now a Union minister in the Modi government.

Political observers believe the ceremony was not just an administrative event but also a strong message ahead of future electoral battles in eastern India. The visible camaraderie between Himanta and Suvendu Adhikari has already sparked fresh political discussions, especially in the context of West Bengal politics and the BJP’s long-term expansion plans.
