Ayushman Bharat Applications Under Scanner as Verification Rules Get Stricter
Stricter Aadhaar checks and digital verification under Ayushman Bharat may lead to rejection of applications over document or eligibility issues.

The Central government has tightened eligibility and verification rules under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), leading to growing concerns among applicants over possible rejection of health cards. With Aadhaar mismatches, duplicate registrations and income-related discrepancies now under stricter scrutiny, many families could lose access to the scheme’s ₹5 lakh annual cashless treatment benefit.

Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, operated by the National Health Authority (NHA), is one of India’s largest public healthcare programmes, offering free treatment coverage at empanelled government and private hospitals across the country. However, officials have now made digital authentication and database verification mandatory to prevent misuse and eliminate ineligible beneficiaries from the system.

According to government guidelines, several categories of families are not eligible for the scheme. Households with members who regularly pay income tax or hold permanent government jobs may be excluded from receiving benefits. Families owning large pucca houses, heavy agricultural equipment or certain categories of vehicles may also fail the eligibility criteria.

Authorities have also clarified that applicants with more than five acres of irrigated agricultural land or owners of high-income non-agricultural businesses are unlikely to qualify. Those already covered under certain government-sponsored health schemes may also be removed from the beneficiary list.

Apart from income and property-related conditions, document verification has emerged as one of the biggest reasons behind application rejection. Officials say even minor errors in Aadhaar details — such as spelling mistakes in names, incorrect addresses or mismatched dates of birth — can lead to cancellation during digital verification.

Applicants are also being warned to ensure that family details mentioned in ration cards match government records exactly. Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers have become essential for OTP-based authentication during registration and verification processes.

Experts involved in beneficiary assistance say many applications are rejected not because families are ineligible, but because of inconsistencies in submitted documents. They advise applicants to carefully review every detail before applying online or visiting enrolment centres.

Before applying, citizens are being advised to check:

  • Whether Aadhaar information is fully accurate
  • Whether all family members’ names appear correctly on ration cards
  • Whether the mobile number is linked to Aadhaar
  • Whether the applicant’s name exists in the official beneficiary database

The government has, however, introduced certain relaxations for senior citizens above the age of 70. Under revised rules, many elderly citizens are now receiving additional health coverage support under special provisions.

With West Bengal recently joining the Ayushman Bharat framework, awareness regarding eligibility rules and document verification has become especially important for residents seeking medical coverage under the scheme.

Officials have urged applicants to rely only on official government websites and authorised portals for updated information, verification guidelines and registration support.
