The southwest monsoon is likely to arrive in West Bengal on schedule this year, bringing early signs of relief from the scorching summer heat. The Alipore Meteorological Department has indicated that favourable weather conditions are developing rapidly over the Bay of Bengal, while heavy rainfall warnings have already been issued for parts of North Bengal and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
According to weather officials, a low-pressure system has formed over the southern Bay of Bengal, creating conditions conducive for the advance of the southwest monsoon. Meteorologists expect the monsoon winds to reach the Andaman and Nicobar Islands within the next two to three days, marking the formal beginning of this year’s monsoon progression over the Indian subcontinent.

The weather department has warned that the developing system could trigger intense rainfall activity across the island region. Tourists visiting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been advised to remain cautious due to the possibility of heavy rain, gusty winds, and rough sea conditions over the coming days.
While North Bengal is likely to experience significant rainfall activity, South Bengal may continue to struggle with rising temperatures and uncomfortable humidity before the monsoon fully advances into the region.
Officials said the northern districts could witness spells of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, especially in the foothill and sub-Himalayan areas. The rainfall is expected to bring temporary cooling in several districts but may also lead to localized waterlogging and travel disruptions in vulnerable areas.

In contrast, southern districts including Kolkata are likely to face hotter and more humid conditions in the short term. Weather experts have indicated that daytime temperatures may rise further before monsoon showers begin offering widespread relief.
The latest forecast has raised hopes among residents across Bengal, particularly after weeks of oppressive heat and humidity. Farmers and agricultural sectors are also closely monitoring the monsoon’s progress, as timely rainfall remains crucial for cultivation activities across the state.
The Alipore Meteorological Department is expected to continue monitoring the low-pressure system closely and may issue additional alerts depending on its movement and intensity over the Bay of Bengal.
