Bengal Waits for Rain Relief as Thunderstorm Alert Issued for Several Districts
Thunderstorms and scattered rain are likely in several South Bengal districts, while North Bengal may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall over the weekend.

West Bengal continues to reel under intense heat and unbearable humidity, but the weather office has finally brought a ray of hope for exhausted residents. While Kolkata and large parts of South Bengal are expected to remain hot and sticky through the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms and scattered rainfall in several districts over the next few days. Meanwhile, North Bengal is likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, raising concerns over possible waterlogging and storm-related disruptions.

Friday began with strong sunshine and rising discomfort across the state, with residents desperately waiting for rain to break the oppressive weather conditions. According to the IMD, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy throughout the day, and thunderclouds may develop during the afternoon or evening hours. However, widespread rainfall is unlikely in Kolkata and adjoining areas on Friday.

The weather department has warned that humidity levels in South Bengal will continue to rise, making conditions even more uncomfortable. At the same time, a few districts may experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Districts likely to receive rain include:

  • Murshidabad
  • Birbhum
  • Paschim Bardhaman
  • Jhargram
  • Paschim Medinipur
  • Purulia

Meteorologists have also indicated that temperatures may rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the coming days, particularly in the western districts where heat conditions are expected to remain severe.

In contrast, North Bengal is preparing for a spell of heavy rainfall. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain across several northern districts, including:

  • Darjeeling
  • Kalimpong
  • Jalpaiguri
  • Alipurduar
  • Cooch Behar

Thunderstorms with lightning are expected across all eight districts of North Bengal, stretching from Darjeeling to Malda. Officials have also warned that isolated areas may receive extremely heavy rainfall.

Despite the possibility of rain in some districts, there is unlikely to be any significant change in temperature. The maximum temperature on Friday is expected to hover around 36 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may remain close to 27.9 degrees Celsius.

Humidity is expected to remain extremely high, with relative humidity levels ranging between 48 percent and 93 percent, further increasing discomfort for residents.

The weather pattern is unlikely to change significantly over the weekend. On Saturday, light to moderate rainfall may occur in Purulia, Bankura, East and West Bardhaman, Paschim Medinipur, and Jhargram. Similar weather conditions are expected on Sunday in Murshidabad, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, Paschim Medinipur, and Jhargram.

According to the weather office, even though scattered rainfall may bring temporary relief in some areas, the humid and sticky conditions are expected to persist across most parts of the state.
