RG Kar Case: Calcutta High Court Directs CBI to Seal All Relevant Areas at Hospital

RG Kar Case: Calcutta High Court Directs CBI to Seal All Relevant Areas at Hospital
Calcutta High Court asked the CBI to seal all relevant areas linked to the RG Kar case, including locations beyond the seminar hall.

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the CBI to immediately seal all locations linked to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case, not just the seminar hall where the crime took place. The court’s sharp observations came during a fresh hearing into the investigation sought by the victim’s family nearly two years after the horrific incident shook Bengal.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh asked the central agency whether the crime scene had already been unsealed and stressed that every location relevant to the investigation must remain protected in the interest of justice.

The case relates to the rape and murder of a woman doctor inside RG Kar Hospital in August 2024. Sanjay Roy, the convicted accused in the case, has already been sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the victim’s family recently approached the High Court again, raising concerns over the handling of the investigation and preservation of the crime scene.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the CBI informed the court that the seminar hall where the incident occurred was still sealed. But the victim’s family claimed that the office of former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, located on the seventh floor of the same building, remained open despite its possible relevance to the case.

The court then questioned the CBI on whether it had considered sealing any other areas connected to the investigation. The judges asked if additional spaces within the hospital premises had been secured for forensic or investigative purposes.

At one stage of the proceedings, the Division Bench made it clear that the RG Kar crime scene must continue to remain sealed. The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing again on Thursday.

The legal battle around the case has already seen multiple developments inside the High Court. Earlier, three separate benches had recused themselves from hearing the matter. On May 12, a Division Bench led by Justice Rajasekhar Mantha and Justice Rai Chattopadhyay stepped away from the case, observing that such an important matter required urgent consideration.

Later, Chief Justice Sujoy Paul’s bench stated that all petitions filed by the victim’s family — including requests for inspection of the RG Kar crime scene — would be heard by a newly assigned Division Bench. The matter is now being heard by the bench of Justice Sarkar and Justice Ghosh.

With fresh questions emerging over the preservation of crucial locations linked to the investigation, the High Court’s latest directive has once again brought the RG Kar case back into sharp public and legal focus.
