A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-filled vehicle in Pakistan’s Lakki Marwat district, killing eight people and injuring dozens.

A devastating suicide bombing ripped through a crowded market in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday, killing at least eight people — including two security personnel — and injuring 35 others. The powerful blast, which struck the busy Naurang Bazar area in Lakki Marwat district, has once again exposed the fragile security situation in Pakistan’s northwest region, long plagued by militant violence.

Police officials said the attacker was travelling in a three-wheeler auto rickshaw packed with explosives before detonating the vehicle at Phattak Chowk, a densely populated commercial zone crowded with shoppers and commuters. The explosion triggered chaos across the market, damaging nearby shops and vehicles while sending terrified residents fleeing for safety.

Among those killed were two traffic police officers who were reportedly on duty near the blast site. A woman was also among the victims. Emergency responders rushed the injured to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Sarai Naurang, where doctors struggled to manage the sudden influx of critically wounded patients.

Several victims with severe burn and shrapnel injuries were later shifted to hospitals in Bannu and Peshawar for advanced medical treatment. Authorities immediately declared a medical emergency in nearby hospitals, with healthcare workers and emergency staff being urgently mobilised.

Rescue teams from Rescue 1122 launched extensive operations moments after the blast. Ambulances, medical crews and disaster response units worked through the wreckage to evacuate the injured and secure the area. Rescue 1122 spokesperson Shahdab Khan confirmed that emergency personnel reached the site within minutes of the explosion.

The attack prompted a swift response from the provincial administration. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Suhail Afridi sought a detailed report from the Inspector General of Police and condemned the attack. Offering condolences to the victims’ families, the chief minister assured full government assistance and support.

Security forces later cordoned off the area and began a forensic investigation to determine the nature of the attack and identify any militant group involved. No organisation had claimed responsibility for the bombing at the time of reporting.

The latest attack comes amid growing concerns over rising militant activity in Pakistan’s northwestern belt bordering Afghanistan. The region has witnessed multiple attacks on civilians and security personnel in recent months, despite repeated counterterror operations by Pakistani authorities.

The tragedy followed another deadly incident in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa just a day earlier. On Monday, at least 11 people travelling to a wedding ceremony were killed after their vehicle plunged into a ravine in the tourist region of Malam Jabba in Swat district. Several women and children were among the victims, including the groom’s mother.
