A late-night demolition spree at Kolkata’s iconic Hogg Market has snowballed into a legal battle, with a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Calcutta High Court alleging that the vandalism took place in the presence of police officials. The incident, unfolding amid post-election tensions, has raised serious questions over law enforcement accountability.
According to the petitioner, portions of the market and nearby temporary structures were allegedly demolished using bulldozers while police personnel stood by. The PIL seeks action against the officers present at the scene, arguing that their inaction enabled the destruction. It also urges the court to intervene in similar incidents of vandalism reported across the state following the election results.
The violence erupted on the night of vote counting, shortly after a major political shift in West Bengal, where the BJP secured a clear majority after 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule. In the charged atmosphere, reports emerged of a group carrying BJP flags entering the New Market area and targeting hawkers’ stalls near Hogg Market. Allegations also surfaced of a Trinamool Congress party office being damaged.
Eyewitness accounts and local claims suggest that the situation escalated rapidly, spreading fear among residents and traders in the area. Police and central forces were deployed soon after the incident, but the petitioner contends that key actions—or lack thereof—by police officials warrant judicial scrutiny.
The case is expected to come up for hearing as early as tomorrow, with the court likely to examine the extent of police responsibility and the broader implications of post-poll unrest in the state.
