Unsettled weather continues to grip West Bengal, with fresh warnings of Nor’wester storms likely to sweep across Kolkata and several districts of south Bengal later today. The combination of cloudy skies, gusty winds, and evening thunderstorms is expected to persist, bringing both relief from heat and disruptions to daily life.
For the past few days, the state has been experiencing overcast conditions followed by evening showers, often coinciding with peak office hours and causing inconvenience for commuters. According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, Friday will see partly to fully cloudy skies throughout the day, with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and strong winds likely in the afternoon or evening. Temperatures are expected to remain mild, with a maximum around 31°C and a minimum near 21°C.

Meteorologists have attributed the current weather pattern to a trough extending from south Madhya Pradesh to Jharkhand, along with a cyclonic circulation over eastern Bihar. These systems are drawing significant moisture from the Bay of Bengal, fueling cloud formation and rainfall across the region.
Nor’wester Alert: Thunderstorms to Hit Kolkata and South Bengal Again

While all districts of south Bengal are likely to receive rainfall, the western belt—including Paschim Bardhaman, Bankura, Purulia, and Purba Bardhaman—may experience more intense storm activity. Wind speeds in these areas could reach between 50 and 60 km/h.
Looking ahead, light rain is expected in parts of Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, and Bankura on Saturday, the day scheduled for the new government’s swearing-in ceremony at Brigade Parade Ground. Other districts may see relatively drier conditions. From Sunday, rainfall activity is likely to decrease slightly, though scattered showers will continue in coastal and western districts. A fresh spell of rain is forecast to intensify again around May 13.

North Bengal is also expected to remain under similar weather conditions. Thunderstorms with rain are likely across all districts today. While lighter rainfall is predicted on May 10 and 11, the intensity is expected to increase again from May 12, particularly in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar.
Data from the past 24 hours shows Kolkata’s maximum temperature at 30.08°C, about 4.09°C below normal, while the minimum temperature was also slightly below average by 1.08°C. Humidity levels peaked at 98%, and the city recorded 48.09 mm of rainfall during this period.
Weather experts suggest that this pattern of clouds and rain is unlikely to clear completely in the coming days, indicating continued atmospheric instability across the state.
