23 Red Cards in One Match: Violent Brawl Shocks Brazilian Football Final
A violent brawl in the Campeonato Mineiro final between Atletico Mineiro and Cruzeiro led to 23 red cards, police intervention and one of the most chaotic scenes in Brazilian football.

Brazilian football witnessed one of its most chaotic and embarrassing moments after a massive on-field brawl in the Campeonato Mineiro final resulted in 23 players being sent off, turning a high-profile clash between Atletico Mineiro and Cruzeiro into a scene of chaos. The dramatic incident unfolded in Belo Horizonte, overshadowing Cruzeiro’s narrow 1–0 victory and leaving the match remembered more for violence than football.

The tension exploded in the dying seconds of the match. Cruzeiro had taken the lead through a goal from Kaio Jorge, and the game was deep into stoppage time—specifically the sixth minute of six minutes added on. With Cruzeiro pushing forward again, midfielder Christian broke through and moved dangerously close to goal.

Before he could reach the ball, Atletico Mineiro goalkeeper Everson rushed out and grabbed it. Both players fell in the collision, which initially appeared routine. But moments later the situation spiralled out of control.

Everson suddenly stood up and shoved Christian in the stomach, knocking him back to the ground. He then appeared to drive his knee into the midfielder’s chest while shouting at him. The aggressive reaction immediately triggered outrage among nearby players.

Within seconds, players from both teams rushed into the confrontation. The situation escalated rapidly into pushing, punching and kicking as tempers boiled over. Substitute players and members of the support staff from both sides also stormed onto the pitch, intensifying the chaos.

What followed was a full-scale melee inside the stadium. Players appeared to attack anyone wearing the opposition’s jersey. Security personnel and match officials struggled to separate the players, forcing police to enter the field to restore order.

Despite repeated attempts by referees and security officials, the confrontation continued for several minutes before the situation could finally be brought under control.

Referee Matheus Delgado took drastic action, issuing a staggering 23 red cards after the match. Among those dismissed were 12 players from Cruzeiro and 11 from Atletico Mineiro, making it one of the most extraordinary disciplinary incidents in Brazilian football history.

Even Atletico Mineiro’s star forward Hulk, one of the biggest names in Brazilian football, was among those shown a red card during the chaotic scenes.

Although Cruzeiro secured the trophy with their 1–0 win, the final will likely be remembered not for the result but for the unprecedented mass dismissal that has left a stain on the reputation of Brazilian football.
