Congress Ends Kerala Leadership Deadlock, VD Satheesan Chosen as New Chief Minister
Congress ends days of uncertainty in Kerala by naming VD Satheesan as Chief Minister after the UDF’s sweeping Assembly election victory.

After nearly ten days of intense internal discussions and political suspense following the Kerala Assembly election results, the Congress on Thursday finally announced senior leader VD Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala. The decision ends prolonged uncertainty within the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), which secured a decisive victory in the state but struggled to reach consensus over its leadership choice.

The announcement was made in New Delhi by Congress general secretary and Kerala in-charge Deepa Dasmunshi during a press conference attended by senior party leaders Ajay Maken, Mukul Wasnik and Jairam Ramesh.

The Congress-led UDF registered a strong electoral performance in Kerala by winning 102 Assembly seats, comfortably returning to power. However, despite the emphatic mandate, the party leadership faced considerable internal debate over who should lead the government.

Apart from VD Satheesan, the race for the Chief Minister’s post had also included Congress organisational general secretary KC Venugopal and veteran party leader Ramesh Chennithala.

According to party sources, the Congress legislative party had initially leaned towards proposing Venugopal’s name for the top post. However, a significant section of newly elected MLAs strongly backed Satheesan, arguing that he played the central role in rebuilding the party after the UDF’s disappointing defeat in the 2021 Assembly elections.

Supporters within the party credited Satheesan with reviving the Congress organisation at the grassroots level and leading the opposition aggressively against the ruling Left government over the past few years.

Eventually, the party high command endorsed Satheesan’s candidature, bringing an end to days of speculation and lobbying inside the Congress camp.

VD Satheesan is a seasoned politician and multiple-term MLA from the Paravur constituency in Ernakulam district. Known for his strong organisational connect and popularity among grassroots Congress workers, Satheesan had served as the Leader of Opposition in the previous Assembly.

The final decision reportedly came after a high-level meeting held at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in Delhi on Wednesday night. Senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, attended the nearly 40-minute discussion focused on Kerala’s leadership issue.

Following the meeting, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had hinted that the party would officially announce the next Chief Minister on Thursday — a promise that was fulfilled with Satheesan’s elevation as leader of the Congress legislative party.

While the Congress has confirmed his leadership, the date of Satheesan’s swearing-in ceremony has not yet been announced officially.

Political observers see Satheesan’s appointment as a significant generational shift within Kerala Congress politics, with the party choosing a leader perceived as energetic, organisationally strong and closely connected to cadre-level workers.

With the leadership question finally settled, the Congress will now focus on government formation and delivering on the promises that helped the UDF return to power in Kerala after years of political struggle.
