Kolkata’s power centre turned symbolic on Sunday night as Nabanna glowed in saffron, setting the stage for Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s first official workday on Monday. At 12 noon, he will chair his maiden cabinet meeting—seen as the starting point for drafting a governance blueprint that could define the new administration’s priorities.
The transition from the building’s familiar blue-and-white palette to saffron lighting has drawn immediate attention, both politically and publicly. Observers view it as a visual marker of change following the formation of the new government. With expectations high, Monday’s meeting is likely to focus on early policy direction, administrative alignment, and key deliverables.

Alongside Adhikari, five ministers took oath on Saturday: Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Khudiram Tudu, Nisith Pramanik and Ashok Kirtania. However, portfolio allocation remains undisclosed, adding to speculation ahead of the cabinet’s first sitting. Sources suggest that discussions may include distribution of departments and identification of immediate administrative priorities.
Senior bureaucrats are also expected to be part of a parallel consultation process. Meetings with top officials and district magistrates could follow soon, aimed at ensuring coordination between policy decisions and on-ground execution across districts.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway in the Assembly for the swearing-in of newly elected MLAs. The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled over three consecutive days—Wednesday through Friday—preceded by the election of a pro tem Speaker on Tuesday. Governor R. N. Ravi will administer the oath.

Sunday evening’s illumination of Nabanna drew large crowds along the Hooghly riverfront and near Vidyasagar Setu, with many capturing the moment on their phones. For supporters, the saffron glow represents the dawn of a new political phase; for others, it underscores the scale of change unfolding in West Bengal’s administrative landscape.
