Vijay’s First Orders as CM: Free Power, Anti-Drug Drive, Women’s Safety Force
CM Vijay’s first orders include free power, anti-drug task force, and women’s safety force, signalling key priorities for Tamil Nadu’s new government.

Hours after taking oath as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, actor-turned-politician C.S. Joseph “Thalapathy” Vijay rolled out his government’s first set of directives—promising free electricity up to 200 units, a crackdown on narcotics, and a dedicated force to strengthen women’s safety. The announcements, made on his very first day in office, signal the administration’s immediate priorities.

Sworn in on Sunday at Chennai’s Nehru Stadium, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader used his inaugural orders to outline a governance roadmap rooted in welfare and law enforcement. According to officials, households consuming up to 200 units of electricity will receive it free of cost. To tackle the state’s growing drug menace, Vijay has ordered the formation of a special task force. In addition, a dedicated women’s safety unit will be set up, alongside a helpline to ensure faster response to distress calls.

In his first public remarks as Chief Minister, Vijay sought to frame his rise as a story of perseverance. “I don’t come from a political dynasty. I understand hardship and hunger,” he said, reflecting on his journey and positioning his leadership as grounded in lived experience.

Beyond immediate directives, Vijay also hinted at his broader policy agenda. Education, healthcare, and access to clean drinking water will be key focus areas, he said, while assuring that the interests of farmers and fishermen would be protected.

The new Chief Minister did not shy away from criticising the previous DMK government led by M.K. Stalin. He alleged that the state’s finances had been strained under the previous regime, claiming Tamil Nadu was burdened with debt exceeding ₹10 lakh crore. Vijay pledged fiscal discipline, stating that public money would be safeguarded and misuse of state resources would not be tolerated.

Politically, the road to power has been coalition-driven. In the 234-member Assembly, TVK secured 108 seats—falling short of the 118 needed for a majority. Vijay himself won from two constituencies, bringing the effective tally to 107. However, support from the Congress, CPI(M), CPI, and other allies enabled him to form the government. Leaders from allied parties, including Rahul Gandhi and CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby, attended the swearing-in ceremony.

With his first decisions now on record, Vijay’s government has set an assertive tone—balancing welfare promises with a focus on law and order as it begins its tenure.
