The newly formed BJP government in West Bengal has launched a major bureaucratic reshuffle, removing 16 WBCS officers from the Chief Minister’s Office and transferring dozens of officials across the administration. The rapid overhaul, carried out within hours of the new regime taking charge, is being viewed as the first major restructuring of the state bureaucracy under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
According to official notifications issued on May 9, a total of 62 WBCS (Executive) officers have been transferred through two separate government orders. The most significant move involves 16 senior officers who had been serving in different capacities inside the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

These officers, who held ranks such as Special Secretary, Additional Secretary, Joint Secretary, Senior Deputy Secretary and Deputy Secretary, have now been removed from the CMO and directed to report to the Personnel & Administrative Reforms (P & AR) Department until further instructions.

The officers removed from the CMO include Sudatta Chowdhury, Nitesh Dhali, Sovik Patra, Sankha Santra, Suman Paul, Binayak Ghosh Choudhury, Tilak Mouri Rakshit, Debjani Ojha, Sayak Deb, Rahul Mazumder, Debamoy Chatterjee, Amitjyoti Bhattacharjee, Susamay Biswas, Arun Paul, Biswajit Dhang and Subhashis Ghosh.
Administrative sources said the reshuffle is part of a broader exercise aimed at reorganising the state machinery after the change in government. Many of the transferred officers were associated with the previous administration and had been handling sensitive responsibilities inside Nabanna.

In a separate notification issued the same day, 46 more WBCS (Executive) officers were transferred to various departments across the state. Most of them had been serving as Personal Secretaries or Officers on Special Duty (OSDs) to ministers in the former Trinamool Congress cabinet.
The back-to-back notifications have triggered intense discussions within administrative circles, with officials closely watching how the new government reshapes the bureaucracy in the coming weeks.
Political observers believe the reshuffle reflects the BJP government’s attempt to establish tighter administrative control and place its own governance structure firmly in position immediately after assuming power in Bengal.
