Kolkata and several parts of South Bengal are set to witness unstable weather over the next few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across the region until Tuesday. In some districts, wind speeds could reach up to 70 km per hour, raising concerns about localized storms and sudden weather disruptions at the start of the week.
According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, an active weather system has formed due to a trough line stretching from northern Uttar Pradesh through Chhattisgarh to southern Odisha. This system is drawing large amounts of moisture from the Bay of Bengal into eastern India. As a result, conditions across large parts of West Bengal have become favorable for thunderstorms and scattered rainfall, which may continue for the next few days.

Weather officials said that scattered light to moderate rainfall is likely across all districts of South Bengal throughout the week. While widespread heavy rainfall is not expected in the southern districts, intermittent showers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds may occur in several areas. A weather alert has been issued for Kolkata and all districts of South Bengal from Sunday through Tuesday.
In Kolkata, thunderstorms accompanied by rain and gusty winds are likely to continue until Tuesday. Wind speeds in the city are generally expected to range between 30 and 40 km per hour. However, the situation may intensify on Monday, when gusty winds could reach speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour in some areas of the city. Similar conditions are expected in other districts of South Bengal as well.
Meanwhile, the weather office has issued a stronger warning for five districts of South Bengal where storm activity may be more intense on Monday. Hooghly, Bankura, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, and Birbhum could experience thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching up to 70 km per hour. An orange alert has been issued for these districts in view of the potential severity of the weather.

North Bengal is also expected to face unsettled weather conditions. Heavy rainfall is likely on Sunday in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar districts. These areas may also experience strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 km per hour. Other districts in North Bengal are likely to receive scattered rain accompanied by thunderstorms.
The IMD has issued weather alerts for the hill districts of North Bengal until Wednesday. Meanwhile, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, and Malda are expected to remain under alert for thunderstorms and rain until Tuesday.
Temperature trends may also fluctuate slightly due to the weather system. In North Bengal, temperatures are expected to remain largely stable for the time being. In contrast, South Bengal may see a brief rise in temperature before it gradually falls again over the next few days.

On Sunday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 25.6°C, which is around three degrees above normal for this time of year. On Saturday, the city’s maximum temperature was recorded at 33°C, about 0.6 degrees below the seasonal average.
