Kolkata Police Issues New Hospital Security Guidelines to Prevent Another RG Kar-Type Incident
Lalbazar has issued fresh hospital security guidelines focusing on crowd control, entry checks and protection of patients, doctors and staff.

Determined to prevent a repeat of incidents like the RG Kar controversy, Kolkata Police has rolled out a fresh set of hospital security guidelines across government medical institutions in the city. The move comes after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s recent review meeting with health officials at SSKM Hospital and growing focus on tightening security in state-run healthcare facilities.

The new directives, issued by Lalbazar, place strong emphasis on patient safety, crowd control and stricter surveillance inside hospital premises. Senior police officials have been instructed to coordinate closely with hospital authorities and local police stations to maintain law and order at all times.

Sources said the initiative gained momentum after the Chief Minister personally visited SSKM Hospital a few days ago and held discussions with senior health department officials regarding security and infrastructure gaps in government hospitals.

Following that meeting, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda reportedly reviewed the security situation of hospitals with officers from various police stations before finalising the guidelines.

According to the instructions issued by Lalbazar, police personnel deployed in hospitals will now have greater responsibility in ensuring the safety of patients, doctors, healthcare workers and hospital property.

The guidelines also direct officers to maintain strict law and order inside hospital campuses and remain in constant coordination with hospital administrations whenever required.

A major focus has been placed on regulating entry into hospitals. Police personnel have been instructed to manage the movement of patients, visitors and vehicles in an organised manner to avoid chaos and overcrowding.

The directive further states that thorough security checks must be conducted at all main entry gates of government hospitals. Police teams have also been asked to ensure that touts or middlemen do not gain access to hospital premises.

Officials believe the latest measures are part of a wider administrative push by the new BJP-led government in West Bengal to strengthen security and accountability in public healthcare institutions. With hospitals often witnessing heavy crowds and sensitive emergencies, the administration appears keen to prevent any lapse that could trigger another major controversy.
