The detention of Trinamool Congress leader Debraj Chakraborty has triggered fresh political tremors in North 24 Parganas after police arrested his close associate Amit Chakraborty alias Noni in a brutal promoter assault and extortion case. The crackdown unfolded late Tuesday night across Rajarhat-Gopalpur and Bidhannagar, marking one of the most high-profile police actions since the change of government in West Bengal.
According to police sources, Amit Chakraborty was arrested in connection with allegations of threatening and violently attacking a local promoter over an extortion demand worth ₹50 lakh. Investigators said the accused would be produced before the Barasat district court on Wednesday with a plea for police custody.

The case dates back to December 2025, when promoter Kishore Haldar from Raghunathpur under Baguiati police station allegedly faced pressure to pay a huge sum as “cut money.” Out of fear, he reportedly handed over ₹3 lakh as an initial payment.
However, when the promoter later refused to pay the remaining amount, the accused allegedly assaulted him with iron rods and firearm butts, leaving him seriously injured and bleeding. Following the attack, the businessman lodged a formal complaint at Baguiati police station.
Acting on that complaint, Baguiati police launched a renewed investigation and arrested Amit Chakraborty during a late-night operation on Tuesday. The arrest came shortly after Debraj Chakraborty himself was detained for questioning.

Debraj Chakraborty has long been considered one of the most influential Trinamool Congress faces in North 24 Parganas and Bidhannagar politics. Known for his close proximity to Abhishek Banerjee, he reportedly exercised significant organisational control over youth politics in areas stretching from Kamarhati to Dum Dum and Bidhannagar.
Political observers say Debraj was not merely a councillor or civic functionary but a powerful organisational figure within the district structure of the party. His influence inside the ruling camp during the previous regime was seen as unquestionable.
Sources in the investigative agencies revealed that Debraj had already come under the scanner of the ED and CBI during probes linked to the primary teacher recruitment scam. This time, however, state police and intelligence officials intensified surveillance on him after the Assembly election results and formation of the new BJP-led government in West Bengal.

Investigators were reportedly tracking allegations related to illegal appointments and financial irregularities involving government tenders in the Bidhannagar municipal region. Sensing imminent arrest, Debraj had allegedly switched off all mobile phones and gone underground over the past few days.
Even his close associates and family members reportedly failed to trace his whereabouts. Acting on a tip-off late Tuesday night, police finally located his temporary hideout and detained him for interrogation.
The dramatic police action has sparked intense political discussion across Bengal, with many viewing the fall of Debraj Chakraborty as a major setback for the Trinamool Congress network in North 24 Parganas.
