Bengal to Launch ‘Janata Darbar’: CM Suvendu Adhikari to Hear Public Grievances Directly
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is preparing to launch a ‘Janata Darbar’ programme to directly hear public grievances in West Bengal.

West Bengal is set to introduce a new public outreach initiative modeled on similar programmes in BJP-ruled states, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari preparing to launch a ‘Janata Darbar’ system aimed at directly hearing citizens’ complaints and grievances. Senior officials in the state administration have already begun groundwork for the programme, which is expected to become a regular feature of the new government’s governance strategy.

According to sources in the state administration, the proposed ‘Janata Darbar’ sessions will likely be held once or twice every week, with the Chief Minister interacting with citizens for around two hours during each session. One or two senior government officials are also expected to remain present alongside him to address administrative issues on the spot and ensure faster follow-up action.

The initiative is currently in the planning stage, but preparations are reportedly moving quickly at the highest levels of the administration. Officials are working on the structure, venue management, grievance registration process, and departmental coordination mechanism to ensure the programme functions smoothly once formally launched.

The move is being seen as part of the BJP government’s effort to project a more direct and accessible style of governance in West Bengal after coming to power in the state.

Political observers note that similar public grievance platforms have already been introduced in several BJP-governed states. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath regularly conducts ‘Janata Darbar’ sessions where citizens directly present complaints before the administration. Madhya Pradesh has also implemented comparable outreach programmes.

In Odisha, the state government operates a public hearing initiative called ‘Jana Sunani’, designed to connect the administration directly with people facing civic or bureaucratic issues.

West Bengal now appears ready to adopt a similar model, with the government hoping the initiative will strengthen public communication and improve administrative responsiveness.

Although the final format has not yet been officially announced, sources indicate that the programme may be rolled out soon after internal discussions and logistical planning are completed.

The launch of the ‘Janata Darbar’ is expected to become one of the BJP government’s key governance experiments in Bengal, particularly at a time when the administration is trying to establish a new political and administrative identity in the state.
