Thunderstorms, lightning, and winds up to 40 kmph are forecast across south Bengal this week, with Kolkata likely to receive scattered rain and cloudy skies.

A spell of thunderstorms, scattered rain, and gusty winds is set to sweep across West Bengal this week, with the India Meteorological Department warning of lightning and wind speeds reaching up to 30–40 kmph in several districts. Kolkata and large parts of south Bengal are expected to experience intermittent showers, bringing temporary relief from rising temperatures but also triggering weather alerts across the region.

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, Kolkata may witness brief and scattered light showers on Wednesday afternoon. While the city is expected to remain mostly cloudy from Thursday to Saturday, significant rainfall is unlikely during this period. However, weather conditions may turn unsettled again from Sunday, when intermittent rain is forecast to return and could continue until Tuesday.

The same pattern of rainfall is expected across several districts including Howrah, Hooghly, Purulia, Bankura, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, and Murshidabad. In other parts of south Bengal, isolated showers may continue through Thursday as well.

Weather alerts have been issued for 12 districts in south Bengal due to the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds. On Wednesday, such conditions are expected in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and West Medinipur. Meanwhile, similar alerts have been issued for Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum, East and West Burdwan, and Murshidabad on Sunday, followed by Nadia and Hooghly on Monday.

During these weather events, wind speeds may reach 30 to 40 kilometres per hour, which could temporarily disrupt normal conditions in several areas.

The meteorological department has also indicated that night-time temperatures in south Bengal are unlikely to change significantly over the next seven days. However, daytime temperatures may rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius before dropping again after the next three days.

In north Bengal, the forecast suggests a longer spell of unstable weather. All districts in the region may experience thunderstorms and light rain between Wednesday and the following Tuesday. Gusty winds ranging from 30 to 50 kmph could accompany these showers, along with the risk of lightning. The intensity of the weather system is expected to ease slightly after Monday.

In Kolkata, the minimum temperature on Wednesday was recorded at 24.6°C, which is 2.9°C above normal for this time of year. On Tuesday, the city’s maximum temperature reached 31.1°C, about 1.9°C below the seasonal average.
