A fresh spell of unstable weather has gripped West Bengal, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds sweeping across most districts of South Bengal, while North Bengal braces for continuous rainfall through the week. The change, which began on Sunday, is set to persist for several more days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Kolkata is expected to witness a partly cloudy sky on Tuesday, with a high probability of rain or thundershowers by afternoon or evening. The recent showers have already brought down the minimum temperature by over 5°C below normal. However, as the day progresses, humidity and heat are likely to rise again.

Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds to Drench South Bengal; Week-long Rain Alert in North — When Will It Clear?

On Monday, several districts across South Bengal, including Kolkata, experienced spells of rain and thunderstorms. Meteorologists attribute this pattern to a steady inflow of moisture from the Bay of Bengal. The IMD has indicated that such conditions will continue till Saturday, after which the sky is expected to gradually clear and rainfall activity will reduce.
A thunderstorm alert has been issued for Tuesday in districts including North and South 24 Parganas, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Nadia, Birbhum, and Murshidabad. These areas may experience lightning along with gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h.
Looking ahead, both Friday and Saturday carry similar warnings across almost all districts of South Bengal, suggesting no immediate relief from the unsettled weather.

Meanwhile, North Bengal is also under the influence of an active weather system. Districts such as Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda have been placed under a yellow alert from Tuesday. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected to continue till March 23.
Overall, the prolonged spell of rain and storms is likely to impact daily life across the state, with authorities advising residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity.
