Kolkata Weather Update: New Low-Pressure Brewing in Bay, Heavy Rain Likely

The Kolkata Weather Update brings fresh warnings for the state as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a new low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal this week. While parts of South Bengal have seen reduced rainfall recently, humid conditions continue to cause discomfort. Meteorologists warn that the upcoming weather system could intensify showers and storms across multiple districts.

According to IMD forecasts, the monsoon trough is currently stretching over North Bengal, where heavy to very heavy rain alerts have already been issued. In contrast, southern districts will initially see light to moderate showers before the low-pressure system strengthens rainfall patterns later in the week.

In South Bengal, districts including North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, East Midnapore, and West Midnapore may experience scattered rain and thunderstorms today. Wind speeds are expected to reach 30–40 km/h in some areas. IMD officials confirm that if the low-pressure system develops as projected, most of South Bengal could see a sharp surge in rainfall activity.

For Kolkata, Tuesday began with a partly cloudy sky and intermittent sunshine. Weather experts predict light to moderate showers for the city, with rain intensity likely to increase in the coming days under the influence of the Bay of Bengal system. The city’s weather is expected to alternate between sunny breaks and sudden downpours, keeping residents on alert.

In North Bengal, the scenario is far more intense. Districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, and North Dinajpur are under heavy to very heavy rain warnings. The combination of the monsoon trough and the developing low-pressure area could lead to continuous spells of rainfall, posing risks of waterlogging and minor landslides in hilly regions.

The IMD has advised residents, especially in the hilly terrains of North Bengal, to remain cautious as heavy rain could disrupt transport and daily life. Meanwhile, farmers in both northern and southern districts are preparing for potential crop impacts due to the weather fluctuation.

Meteorologists emphasize that while this phase of rain is crucial for maintaining seasonal averages, the sudden bursts of heavy showers combined with strong winds may cause temporary disruption. Authorities are expected to monitor the evolving situation in the Bay of Bengal closely over the next 48 hours.

With the monsoon still active and oceanic conditions favourable for cyclonic formations, Bengal’s weather remains unpredictable. Residents are advised to keep track of official weather updates and plan accordingly.
