In a dramatic post-midnight move that has jolted West Bengal’s administrative machinery, the Election Commission has reassigned ousted Home Secretary Jagdish Prasad Meena as an election observer in Tamil Nadu. The sudden decision, taken within hours of the poll schedule announcement, has intensified speculation over the fate of former Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, adding fresh political heat ahead of the विधानसभा elections.
The sequence of events unfolded rapidly on Sunday night. Soon after announcing the विधानसभा election dates, the Election Commission initiated a sweeping bureaucratic reshuffle. Jagdish Prasad Meena was removed from his post as Home Secretary in a late-night directive. According to sources, the Commission has now decided to deploy him as an observer in a constituency in Tamil Nadu, a move seen as both administrative and strategic.

Simultaneously, Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty was also relieved of her duties. In her place, the Commission appointed Dushmanta Nariala as the new Chief Secretary, while Sanghamitra Ghosh has taken charge as the new Home Secretary. The Commission has maintained that these changes are aimed at ensuring neutrality and smooth conduct of the electoral process.
However, the timing and manner of the decisions have triggered sharp political reactions. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the Commission, terming the late-night कार्रवाई a “midnight crackdown.” Questioning the process, she remarked, “Is this how officials are removed at 12:30 in the night? Is this democracy?”
The प्रशासनিক shake-up has now opened up a larger question—will Nandini Chakraborty, like Meena, also be assigned duties outside the state? While there is no official confirmation yet, the possibility is being actively discussed in both bureaucratic and political circles.

With elections approaching, such swift and decisive interventions by the Election Commission have clearly set the tone for a high-stakes contest in the state.
