The West Bengal government is set to introduce a law to regulate the rising fees in private schools. Education Minister Bratya Basu made this announcement during a session in the state assembly on Tuesday. The issue was raised by BJP MLA Satyanarayan Mukhopadhyay from Chhatna, Bankura, who questioned the increasing expenses in private schools.
Acknowledging the concerns of parents regarding uncontrolled fee hikes and other irregularities, the minister stated that the government has received multiple complaints in this regard. To address these issues, the government is planning to establish a commission. Additionally, a bill to regulate private school fees will soon be introduced in the assembly.
Formation of West Bengal Private School Regulatory Commission
The West Bengal government had previously decided to set up a commission to regulate fee hikes in private schools. In August 2023, the state cabinet gave its approval for the establishment of the West Bengal Private School Regulatory Commission.
According to sources from the Education Department, the commission will have a total of 11 members, headed by a retired judge. The other members will include:
- The School Education Commissioner
- Presidents of the Primary Education Board, Secondary Education Board, and Higher Education Council
- Two education experts nominated by the Education Minister
- Representatives from CBSE and ICSE boards
The primary role of this commission will be to investigate complaints related to school fees and take appropriate actions. The government aims to prevent excessive fee hikes in private schools and ensure the swift resolution of grievances.
Strict Law to Control Private School Fees
Education Minister Bratya Basu emphasized that the government will introduce a strict law to regulate private school fees. A bill regarding this matter will soon be presented in the state assembly.
Private schools in West Bengal have frequently faced allegations of charging exorbitant fees during admissions and for other facilities. Protests by parents against such issues have also been reported. If the state government successfully enacts this law, it could provide much-needed relief to parents and ensure greater transparency in private school fee structures.
