Amit Shah Highlights Bengal’s RG Kar Incident but Declines Meeting with Victim’s Family

During his recent visit to Bengal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah raised the RG Kar incident to criticize Trinamool Congress, claiming that the safety of women in Bengal has been compromised. However, Shah has faced backlash for not meeting with the victim’s parents, who had sought an audience to discuss the incident directly with him. Shah’s statements, which highlighted women’s safety in Bengal, included references to incidents from Sandeshkhali to the RG Kar case, sparking significant conversation and concern.

The victim’s parents had sent an email to Amit Shah requesting a meeting, expressing their ongoing distress and their wish for justice. In the message, the victim’s father wrote, “I am requesting an appointment at your convenience. My wife and I wish to meet with you to discuss this grievous situation. We are going through a highly distressing time and need your guidance and support.”

Before Shah’s arrival, the victim’s family had already appeared on television to express their wish to meet him. They expressed their determination to do everything within their power to achieve justice for their daughter, including meeting with the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Health Minister if needed. Despite their efforts, Shah returned to Delhi without arranging a meeting, leaving the family disappointed.

In response to media questions, Dr. Tapas Pramanik, a medical officer at RG Kar Medical College, stated that he had encouraged the family to reach out to Shah, which led them to send the email. As per Pramanik, the family included his email ID in the correspondence for reference, hoping it would add weight to their request.

This development has sparked discussions about the role of political leaders in directly engaging with and supporting victims of such incidents. Shah’s critique of Bengal’s safety for women was a focal point of his speech, yet many questioned the decision not to engage with the family of an RG Kar victim in person. For now, the family continues to seek justice and support, determined to pursue all necessary steps to ensure accountability.
