Cyclone Dana, which was anticipated to impact South Bengal heavily, has fortunately shown minimal disruptive effects. However, due to the cyclone’s influence, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted prolonged rainfall across several regions in Bengal, especially in South Bengal. This steady pattern of rainfall is expected to extend over the next few days, with chances of light to heavy showers continuing up until Kali Puja.
South Bengal’s Ongoing Rainfall Scenario
IMD’s Alipore Weather Office has issued updates indicating scattered heavy rainfall across specific districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, Jhargram, and the twin Medinipur districts. While Cyclone Dana’s influence may not have led to extreme weather disruptions, there is an alert for significant rain in these areas on Friday. Additionally, moderate rainfall is expected to occur across other districts in South Bengal without any severe warnings for heavy downpours.
The rains are predicted to continue into Saturday, October 27, with widespread rainfall anticipated across nearly all of South Bengal’s districts. IMD forecasts light to moderate rain across the region on Saturday, with the weather pattern holding steady on Sunday as well.
Rainy Festivities Ahead of Kali Puja
According to the IMD, this rainy spell is likely to persist in parts of South Bengal until October 31, overlapping with the Kali Puja festivities. This could mean that residents of South Bengal will celebrate Kali Puja amidst intermittent showers, a damp backdrop to the joyous celebrations.
In Kolkata and surrounding areas, residents can expect overcast skies with light to moderate showers throughout the day. Despite the rain, the IMD reports that there are no significant warnings of heavy downpours.
Rainfall in North Bengal: Extended Forecast
While South Bengal bears the brunt of Cyclone Dana’s residual effects, scattered showers are also expected in parts of North Bengal. Five districts are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall today, with intermittent heavy rains in regions such as Dinajpur and Malda. The weather department expects similar conditions to persist in North Bengal over the weekend, with scattered light to moderate rains predicted in almost every district through Monday.
Extended Forecast for Bengal
With light to moderate rainfall likely across Bengal, both North and South Bengal residents are preparing for an extended spell of rains that will likely last till the end of October. The IMD predicts an extended rainy spell across both regions, meaning the state could witness a wet backdrop during the traditional Kali Puja celebrations.
