Trump Claims Ceasefire Credit for the 11th Time in 21 Days — Congress Questions Modi's Silence

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has, for the ninth time in 20 days, claimed that the India-Pakistan ceasefire was only possible because of his intervention. As Trump continues to take credit, the Congress Party has strongly questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence, labeling the US President as “Donaldbhai.”

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Congress MP Jairam Ramesh wrote:

“In 20 days, across three countries and three cities, Trump has made the same claim. He proudly states that he used trade as leverage to end the four-day war between India and Pakistan. Yet, PM Modi remains completely silent. Why?”

On May 7, after India launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, both countries reportedly agreed to a ceasefire within four days. Indian officials stated that Pakistan reached out through the hotline channel with a request for ceasefire, which India accepted — no third-party involvement was acknowledged.

Trump’s Claims vs India’s Official Stand

Even after India’s repeated denials, Donald Trump continues to assert that it was his pressure, through trade threats, that forced both nations to step back. His Secretary of Treasury echoed this during the International Trade Day event on May 23.

Congress’s Scathing Attack: Is Modi Afraid of the Truth?

Jairam Ramesh added: “Is Trump doing what Modi does best — lying? Or is he telling a half-truth? Why is Modi avoiding a direct response?”

India Reiterates: No Third-Party Involvement

Top Indian officials including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, military spokespersons, and even PM Modi have consistently said that the ceasefire was a bilateral decision. During a recent meeting with NDA chief ministers and deputy chief ministers, Modi reportedly stated that Pakistan directly requested the ceasefire and that no third party was involved.

Yet, PM Modi has never publicly contradicted Trump’s repeated claims — a silence that the Congress sees as deeply suspicious and politically significant.
