TET Shock: 10,000 Primary Teachers Face Job Loss in West Bengal

In a major blow to nearly 10,000 primary school teachers in West Bengal, those who were appointed in 2021 based on the 2014 TET (Teacher Eligibility Test) results now face the threat of losing their jobs. The crisis arises from the latest directive issued by the NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education).

According to the Supreme Court’s instructions, candidates holding BDP and D.El.Ed degrees were temporarily allowed to join primary schools. However, they were also mandated to complete the D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) course within six months of appointment. Now, the NCTE has clearly stated that no further relaxation will be given beyond this time frame.

NCTE Warning: No Second Chance for the Diploma Course

As per the NCTE guideline, those who fail to successfully complete the six-month D.El.Ed course will lose their eligibility and their appointments will be considered illegal. This has created massive panic among the newly appointed teachers.

NCTE further clarified that only one attempt is allowed to pass the course. Anyone who fails to qualify will not be allowed another opportunity, putting their careers at serious risk.

How Did This Crisis Arise?

Many candidates passed TET in 2014 but were appointed in 2021 without completing the mandatory teaching diploma.

The Supreme Court had temporarily allowed these teachers to join, provided they completed the D.El.Ed course in six months.
