Symbolic Statue to Be Installed Tomorrow at R.G. Kar Medical College in Memory of Abused Doctor

Symbolic Statue to Be Installed Tomorrow at R.G. Kar Medical College in Memory of Abused Doctor

In a poignant tribute to the memory of a female doctor who was tragically abused and murdered, junior doctors at R.G. Kar Medical College have announced the installation of a symbolic statue. This initiative follows a promise made during their protests near Swasthya Bhavan. The statue, which will be unveiled on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the college’s Platinum Jubilee Hall courtyard, symbolizes the anguish and suffering of the victim, though it bears no direct resemblance to the doctor.

The fiber-crafted statue is not designed to replicate the victim’s physical appearance but to depict the broader expression of pain and trauma endured by women in similar circumstances. Junior doctors explained that the purpose of this statue is to create a lasting reminder of the struggles and injustices faced by the victim and others like her.

The horrific incident occurred on August 9, when the body of the female doctor was discovered in a seminar room on the fourth floor of R.G. Kar Medical College’s emergency department. The subsequent investigation led the Kolkata Police to arrest a civic volunteer within 24 hours. However, following a directive from the Kolkata High Court, the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further inquiry.

The CBI’s investigation uncovered evidence tampering allegations, leading to the arrest of two key figures in September: Sandeep Ghosh, the then-principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondal, the former officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station. It is worth noting that Ghosh had already been arrested earlier for unrelated corruption charges before his involvement in the case came to light.
