
Suvendu Adhikari to Not Contest in 2026 West Bengal Elections
BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, will not contest in the 2026 Assembly elections. According to sources, he will play a crucial role in BJP’s strategy to bring the party to power in the state by leading the campaign across Bengal as Amit Shah’s deputy.
Dibyendu Adhikari to Contest from Nandigram
While Suvendu Adhikari steps away from direct electoral contest, his brother and former Tamluk MP, Dibyendu Adhikari, will be BJP’s candidate from the Nandigram Assembly seat. Suvendu had previously defeated West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram during the 2021 Assembly elections by a margin of 1,956 votes. The latest trends from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections indicate BJP is ahead in the Nandigram constituency by 8,200 votes.
Suvendu Adhikari Not to Contest from Bhabanipur
There was speculation that Suvendu Adhikari might challenge Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur seat. However, Delhi sources suggest that he will not contest in the 2026 elections but will likely enter the Assembly later through a by-election.
BJP to Project Suvendu Adhikari as CM Candidate
According to BJP insiders, Suvendu Adhikari will be projected as the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2026 elections. The BJP is strategically planning its campaign, focusing on the 90 Assembly constituencies where it was leading in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. To form a government in the state, the party needs at least 148 seats, making this election crucial for BJP’s ambitions in West Bengal.
BJP’s Strategy for the 2026 Elections
With the aim of securing a majority, BJP is gearing up with an aggressive campaign led by central and state leaders. Suvendu Adhikari, along with Amit Shah, Dilip Ghosh, Sukanta Majumdar, and Amit Malviya, will spearhead the party’s efforts to challenge the ruling Trinamool Congress.
The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections are expected to be a high-stakes battle between the BJP and TMC.
