Kolkata | April 2025: Following a landmark judgment by the Supreme Court of India, a total of 25,572 teaching and non-teaching jobs in state-aided and government-sponsored schools across West Bengal have been cancelled. Among these, 6,276 candidates have been officially declared ineligible due to multiple irregularities in the recruitment process conducted by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC).
📌 Breakdown of Irregularities Identified by the Supreme Court:
1. Out-of-panel appointments – 1,498 candidates
2. Rank jumps – 926 candidates
3. OMR tampering – 4,091 candidates
4. Multiple frauds (e.g., OMR + others) – 239 candidates
The apex court confirmed that all 6,276 individuals were recruited illegally, without possessing the required merit or qualifications.
Repercussions: 12% Interest & Full Salary Refund for Ineligible Candidates
Once the eligible candidates’ list is officially published, the state will seek full salary reimbursement along with 12% interest from the 6,276 ineligible individuals. This step aims to maintain financial accountability and uphold judicial integrity.
SSC’s New Initiative to Protect Eligible Teachers
To protect those who were wrongfully terminated despite being eligible, the SSC has emailed a new list comprising 19,296 names to the West Bengal Education Department. These individuals were not marked ineligible by the Supreme Court and have no proven allegations against them.
The list includes:
1. Candidate names
2. School details
3. Recruitment batch details
The Education Department will now scrutinize the data and take legal consultation before proceeding with reappointment or reinstatement processes.
Government’s Stand on the Eligible Candidates’ Demand
Since the court order, approximately 26,000 job-terminated candidates have been demanding the release of the eligible list to get their jobs back. Acting on this, the candidates met Education Minister Bratya Basu last Friday.
During the meeting, the SSC Chairman confirmed that preparation of the eligible and ineligible lists is underway, and final publication is expected by April 21, 2025, pending legal advice.
What’s Next?
As per sources in the Education Department, the list sent by the SSC is under review, and further decisions will align with court orders and applicable legal procedures. The state government appears committed to ensuring that eligible candidates are reinstated fairly and swiftly.
