Unlike Monday, Kolkata’s streets did not witness any clashes during the anti-war peace march on Tuesday. The rally, organized by the Left Front and other left-leaning groups, concluded peacefully.

On Monday, BJP workers—led by party councillor Sajal Ghosh—had disrupted a similar anti-war march organized by civil society groups and leftist organizations. Holding the national flag (instead of party flags), they accused the protesters of “anti-national” activities, leading to chaos at Moulali crossing. However, no such confrontation occurred during Tuesday’s march.

The rally began around 5:15 PM from Lenin’s statue at Dharmatala, proceeded via Lenin Sarani, and ended at Sealdah. Heavy police presence ensured no untoward incidents. However, near Subodh Mullick Square, a group of youths on motorcycles carrying BJP flags was spotted. Police briefly slowed the march, but the bikers did not stop.

When asked about Tuesday’s march, Sajal Ghosh said they had no scheduled protest, hence no intervention. On Monday, their plan was specifically to counter the “anti-national” march at Moulali.

Organizer Amitabh Bhattacharya said authorities were informed beforehand. Social media had been abuzz with debates over the march, with BJP factions vowing to oppose what they called “anti-India” demonstrations. March participants alleged that on Monday, Sajal’s group attacked them with diesel and Mobil oil—claims Ghosh denied, though he warned, “If anyone speaks against the nation, they will face consequences.”

Tuesday’s march saw participation from Left Front allies as well as groups like SUCI and CPI(ML) Liberation. SUCI’s presence was particularly notable. A minor scuffle broke out over who would lead the march, prompting Left Front chairman Biman Bose to announce, “Not everyone can be in the front; stand in rows.” Prominent figures like Miratun Nahar and Bolan Gangopadhyay joined the rally.
