In response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India launched a decisive counter-operation named Operation Sindoor, destroying 9 terrorist hideouts and crippling several of Pakistan’s air defense systems. A key player in this mission? India’s very own ‘Akash’ Surface-to-Air Missile Defense System, developed entirely with indigenous technology.
🛡️ What is ‘Akash’ and how does it work?
‘Akash’ is a medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system capable of intercepting enemy aircraft, missiles, and drones within a range of 80 to 120 km. One of its most groundbreaking features is automatic threat assessment—the system can independently analyze incoming threats and prioritize response accordingly.

⚙️ Technology Behind the Missile
Akash is equipped with multiple advanced radars, automated control systems, launchers, and real-time troop communication modules. Its operational structure is comparable to the Russian S-400 system, but it has been developed entirely in India by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

👨🔬 Who led the Akash missile project?
The project was led by Padma Shri Prahlada Ramarao, former Chief Research Controller of DRDO, who was also a close associate of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Development began in 1994 and was completed in 2009, with a total cost of just ₹500 crore (approx. $60 million)—a fraction of global missile development budgets.
🌍 Global Recognition and Export Deals
Impressed by its capabilities and cost-effectiveness, Armenia has signed a ₹6,000 crore defense deal with India to procure the Akash system. As per Prahlada Ramarao, no other country has built such a powerful air defense system at such a low cost.
