Mystery Surrounds Death of Burdwan Medical Student Found Bloodied in Underwear, Family Seeks Justice
The tragic and mysterious death of a 23-year-old medical student from Burdwan Medical College has resurfaced, raising serious questions about the circumstances of his demise. Sheikh Mobarak Hossain, a junior doctor in the surgery department, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in August 2021. His lifeless body, clothed only in underwear and covered in blood, was discovered near the hostel of Burdwan Medical College. The family, struggling for justice for the past three years, believes their son was murdered, contrary to the college authorities’ claim of a tragic accident.
According to the college administration, Mobarak allegedly fell from the third-floor balcony of the college hostel, leading to his death. However, his family vehemently disputes this version of events, asserting that their son was murdered, and the truth is being concealed. Mobarak’s brother, Sheikh Firoz Ahmed, speaking to a prominent news outlet, shared the family’s anguish and frustration over the lack of progress in the case. “We believe my brother was killed and thrown. If he had fallen from the roof, there would have been clear markings on the ground. I saw for myself—there was no such sign. We filed a case, but every time we go to court, there is just another date, with no hearing. It’s like an invisible hand is stalling the process,” Firoz lamented.
The night before Mobarak’s death, senior students had reportedly invited him to dinner, according to his family. The following morning, he was found in a pool of blood below the hostel. The family claims that when Mobarak was discovered, he was wearing only his underwear, which raises further suspicion about what transpired that night. Despite these troubling signs, the hospital authorities quickly labeled the incident an accident, dismissing the possibility of foul play.
Initially, the family had demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, suspecting that the investigation was being mishandled. However, the case was eventually handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and even after three years, the family has seen no concrete results or justice.
Sheikh Firoz revealed the family’s emotional and financial struggles as they fight for justice. “My uncle’s son Mobarak died, and my uncle doesn’t have the financial means to hire top lawyers to fight this case. It’s been a long and painful wait for justice, and yet there has been no proper hearing in court,” Firoz said, expressing the deep frustration of a family trapped in a seemingly never-ending legal battle.
This case has come into focus once again, particularly in the wake of the recent outcry following the murder and rape of a young female doctor from RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The RG Kar case has sparked protests by junior doctors and has gripped national attention, with the case now being fought in India’s Supreme Court. The developments in the RG Kar case have reignited demands for justice in Mobarak’s case, with many calling for renewed investigations and accountability.
While thousands await justice in the RG Kar case, the family of Sheikh Mobarak Hossain continues to hope that their son’s case will not be forgotten. They have endured three years of heartbreak, unanswered questions, and silence from the authorities. Their plea is simple: for a proper investigation to be conducted, the truth to be uncovered, and justice to be served for the young doctor whose promising life was tragically cut short under mysterious and suspicious circumstances.
