Kolkata, May 16, 2025: The West Bengal Police on Thursday night issued a formal clarification regarding the alleged lathi charge on job aspirants protesting near Bikash Bhavan. Amid strong criticism and accusations of police brutality, ADG (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar stated, “The police showed restraint from the beginning.”
Responding to questions on why force was used, the ADG explained that for the last ten days, the protesters had been peacefully demonstrating in rotation outside Bikash Bhavan. The administration had allowed this to continue without intervention. However, the situation escalated on Thursday when a section of the protesters allegedly broke through barricades and tried to forcibly enter the premises.
🛑 Protesters Tried to Enter Bikash Bhavan, Police Claims
According to Sarkar, police did not retaliate even during initial scuffles. “The protesters clashed with the police but we remained restrained,” he said. The situation reportedly took a serious turn in the evening when around 500–600 government employees were trapped inside Bikash Bhavan due to the blockade.
“When officials tried to exit the premises, the protesters turned aggressive and attacked the police. We were forced to take action to bring the situation under control,” Sarkar added.
🚨 Tension After Sabyasachi Dutta’s Arrival
Another flashpoint occurred when TMC leader and Bidhannagar Municipality Chairman Sabyasachi Dutta tried to enter the premises. Protesters lay down in front of his car to stop him, leading to further tension. Some even alleged that Dutta was pushed by the crowd.
Police responded to these claims, stating, “The matter will be looked into. Sabyasachi Dutta was at Bikash Bhavan for official work when protesters tried to obstruct him.”
📚 Background: Protest Over Job Scam and Terminations
Thousands of job aspirants in West Bengal have been protesting for months after being terminated due to alleged irregularities in school recruitment processes. They claim to be victims of the SSC scam and have been demanding justice, reinstatement, and fresh recruitment. The sit-in outside Bikash Bhavan was part of this ongoing protest.
🔚 Conclusion
While police maintain they acted with maximum restraint, the incident has raised questions over use of force against peaceful protesters. The matter is now gaining political traction and may see further legal and administrative developments in the coming days.
