In a significant development, the Kolkata High Court has granted interim bail to Sujaykrishna Bhadra, popularly known as ‘Kalighat’s Kaku,’ in connection with a recruitment scam case. The Division Bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha and Justice Apurba Sinha Roy approved his bail on Tuesday, citing medical and humanitarian grounds. However, the court has imposed strict conditions, including close monitoring of his movements by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Background of the Case
Sujaykrishna Bhadra is accused in a high-profile recruitment scam case being investigated by both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). While he had previously secured bail in the ED case, the recent interim bail pertains to the CBI’s investigation. The court emphasized that the decision to grant bail was based on medical reports from two private hospitals, which indicated the need for urgent treatment, including angioplasty.
Conditions Imposed by the Court
The Kolkata High Court has laid down several stringent conditions for the interim bail:
- Sujaykrishna Bhadra must surrender his two mobile numbers to the CBI.
- He is prohibited from meeting any political figures or individuals unrelated to his medical treatment.
- Central forces will be deployed to monitor his movements.
- He cannot leave his residence except for medical purposes.
- The interim bail is valid until the end of March, with the next hearing scheduled for March 20.
Medical and Humanitarian Grounds
The court expressed concern over Bhadra’s health, noting that his medical condition requires immediate attention. Reports from private hospitals highlighted the necessity of angioplasty, prompting the court to prioritize his treatment. The bench stated, “If something happens to him during this period, who will take responsibility?” The court has temporarily set aside the primary allegations in the case to focus on his health.
Current Status
Bhadra, who was previously hospitalized due to health complications, is currently lodged in Presidency Jail after being discharged. Meanwhile, the CBI has already collected his voice samples as part of the ongoing investigation.
What’s Next?
The interim bail provides Bhadra with an opportunity to undergo necessary medical procedures. However, the CBI will maintain strict surveillance to ensure compliance with the court’s conditions. The case is set to resume on March 20, where further developments are expected.
