New National Education Policy Drives Change, Revised Syllabus to be Released in January 2025
The West Bengal Higher Secondary Education Council has announced significant changes to the Higher Secondary (Class XI-XII) examination system. In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP), the council is set to introduce a semester-based structure for the curriculum, aimed at easing the academic burden on students.
Details of the Change
Under the new system, the curriculum for Classes XI and XII will be divided into four semesters. This was revealed during a press briefing by Chiranjeeb Bhattacharya, President of the West Bengal Higher Secondary Council. Students entering Class XI after passing their secondary exams will now appear for exams in a semester-based format.
As per the plan, schools will conduct the two semesters for Class XI, while the council will oversee the two semesters for Class XII. Final assessments for the Higher Secondary Examination will be based on the last two semesters of Class XII.
Syllabus Revision and Timeline
The council has already drafted a revised syllabus, with certain sections being trimmed to make the curriculum more manageable. The final syllabus is expected to be published in January 2024. This change is aimed at simplifying the syllabus and addressing concerns raised by students who found the earlier syllabus challenging.
Reactions from Educators and Students
While some educators have raised questions about the quality and depth of education under the revised syllabus, the council believes the changes will align the curriculum with national standards and reduce exam-related stress for students.
The implementation of the semester system and a revised syllabus is expected to redefine the Higher Secondary examination process, making it more student-friendly while adhering to the NEP guidelines.
