Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Life in Southern Bengal, Including Kolkata, Due to Deep Depression

Heavy rainfall lashed southern parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, on Monday due to the impact of a deep depression, significantly disrupting daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported widespread rain, causing waterlogging and slow vehicular movement across several areas of the city.

  • Deep Depression Over Southern Bengal: The deep depression over Gangetic West Bengal caused moderate to heavy rainfall across Kolkata and surrounding regions, with over 65 mm of rain recorded between 6:30 am on Sunday and 8:30 am on Monday.
  • Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions: Many parts of Kolkata experienced waterlogging, leading to significant disruptions in normal life. Vehicular movement on arterial roads slowed down, creating traffic congestion in several areas of the city.

  • Depression Movement: The weather system was centered 50 km south of Bankura, 90 km east of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, and 190 km east-southeast of Ranchi on Monday morning. It is expected to move slowly northwestward and weaken into a depression within the next 12 hours, according to the IMD.
  • Forecast and Temperature: Light rain is expected to continue throughout the day, with generally cloudy skies. Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 26.2˚C on Monday, 6.6˚C below the average for this time of year.

The weather system is predicted to move towards Jharkhand and northern Chhattisgarh, but southern Bengal will continue to experience lingering showers in the short term.
