Kolkata, January: Former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, is under the scanner of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for his alleged involvement in a massive corruption scandal. Ghosh, along with his associates, allegedly orchestrated a sophisticated scheme involving forged documents and fraudulent contracts, causing a significant financial loss to the institution.
A Web of Corruption Exposed
According to CBI sources, Sandip Ghosh’s long-standing corruption came to light during a detailed probe into the financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. His associates, Suman Hazra and Biplab Singh, are accused of supplying medicines and medical equipment at exorbitant rates through forged tenders.
Witness testimonies reveal that materials were purchased at nearly twice the market price, with 10% of the total billing amount allegedly going directly into Ghosh’s pockets. The investigation also found that non-existent companies were listed as suppliers in the tender documents, further inflating costs.
Role of Colleagues as Key Witnesses
A significant breakthrough in the case came when Ghosh’s colleagues, who initially remained tight-lipped, started revealing crucial details. The CBI presented incriminating evidence—documents recovered from Ghosh’s residence and offices—leading many to speak up against his malpractices.
The former hospital committee members admitted that they were coerced into signing documents without questioning Ghosh’s directives. These members, including senior administrative officers and the former hospital superintendent, are now vital witnesses in the case.
How the Scam Worked
- Forged Tenders:
Ghosh’s close associates, Suman Hazra and Biplab Singh, reportedly manipulated tender processes to secure contracts for their companies. Fake companies were introduced into the bidding process to create an illusion of competitive pricing. - Inflated Prices:
Supplies, including medicines and medical equipment, were billed at 2-3 times their actual market value. - Document Fraud:
The CBI revealed that several companies listed in the tenders had no real existence, proving the scale of deception. - Committee Suppression:
The hospital’s purchase committee members, under Ghosh’s dominance, were forced to approve these fraudulent deals.
CBI’s Findings and Sandip Ghosh’s Confession
Initially, Ghosh denied all allegations. However, under rigorous interrogation and mounting evidence, he reportedly confessed to his role in the scam. The CBI confirmed that while his associates benefited financially, many committee members did not. Instead, they were pressured into compliance.
Next Steps in the Investigation
The CBI is now focusing on tightening the case with video-recorded testimonies from witnesses and concrete evidence. The investigation aims to ensure that those complicit in the fraud, including Ghosh, Hazra, and Singh, face appropriate legal consequences.
