CCTV Footage and DNA Reports Raise New Questions in RG Kar Medical Student’s Tragic Case
The investigation into the rape and murder of a young medical student at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, has raised fresh concerns. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in its charge sheet, cited forensic reports revealing the involvement of multiple unidentified individuals alongside the prime accused, Sanjay Roy. However, questions remain unanswered about the identities of four other suspects captured in CCTV footage.
CCTV Footage: A Puzzling Trail
The CCTV footage from August 9, recorded between 2:30 AM and 5:51 AM, shows a total of five individuals moving around the crime scene 68 times. Among them, Sanjay Roy is identified, appearing three times entering and exiting the seminar room in the Chest Medicine department. The footage also shows another individual wearing a stethoscope, presumed to be a doctor, but their identity remains unknown. The other three individuals captured in the footage have also not been identified, raising questions about the thoroughness of the investigation.
Forensic Reports: DNA of Seven Individuals Found
The Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory (CFSL) report revealed contaminated or mixed DNA profiles from the victim’s body, identifying genetic material from seven individuals: the victim herself, another unidentified woman, Sanjay Roy, and four unknown men. Despite this critical finding, the CBI has failed to match these DNA profiles with any suspects or identify the individuals captured on camera.
Allegations of Incomplete Investigation
Doctors’ associations and junior medical professionals have criticized the investigation for its shortcomings. The Junior Doctors Front alleged that the crime scene samples were deliberately contaminated to obscure the identity of the real perpetrators. Another faction questioned why the CBI had not cross-verified the DNA profiles with hospital staff or other potential suspects.
Dr. Kaushik Chaki, president of the West Bengal Doctors Forum, stated:
“The Kolkata Police had made progress in their investigation before the case was handed over to the CBI. But since then, there seems to be no significant progress. The CBI had the CCTV footage and CFSL reports within days of the incident, yet they failed to identify the suspects.”
Call for Renewed Investigation
Medical professionals and civil society are demanding a fresh, thorough investigation to bring justice to the victim. Suggestions include scrutinizing hospital duty rosters, interrogating staff visible in the footage, and revisiting DNA analyses.
The lack of clarity and progress in the case has left the medical fraternity and public with an unsettling question: Who were the other individuals present at the crime scene, and why have they not been identified?
