CBI Seeks Custody of Sandeep, Brought to Sealdah Court from Presidency Jail

In connection with the murder and rape of a doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh was arrested on Saturday. The former principal of the hospital is currently in jail custody. The CBI placed him under “show arrest” and is set to request his custody in court on Sunday. Sandeep was brought from Presidency Jail to Sealdah Court under tight security, with slogans demanding justice echoing in the courtroom.

The doctor’s body was discovered at R.G. Kar Medical College on August 9, and the case involves allegations of rape and murder. Alongside, accusations of corruption within the hospital surfaced, leading to protests from students demanding Sandeep’s removal from his position as principal. He was subsequently removed from office and later arrested by the CBI on corruption charges. Now, he has also been arrested in connection with the rape and murder case, with further accusations of evidence tampering against him.

In connection with this case, a civic volunteer was also arrested by the police and is now in CBI custody. Alongside Sandeep, former OC of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mandal, was also arrested on Saturday. According to CBI sources, Sandeep and Abhijit have been charged under Sections 238, 199, and 61(2) of the Indian Penal Code for tampering with evidence, providing false information to protect the accused, and engaging in a criminal conspiracy as government employees.
