AAP Leader Kejriwal Demands Early Elections in November 2024, Citing Political Challenges
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal announced on Sunday that he plans to resign as the Chief Minister of Delhi within the next two days. His decision stems from a desire to let the people decide his political future in the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. Kejriwal emphasized that he would only return to the CM’s post if the public certifies his honesty through their votes.
In a bold move, Kejriwal has called for the elections to be held in November 2024, rather than February 2025, aligning them with the Maharashtra elections. He stated that until the elections, a new chief minister from AAP would be chosen in the coming days.
Kejriwal also addressed concerns over restrictions placed on his administration by the Supreme Court, saying, “If you think I am honest, vote for me in large numbers. I will return to the CM’s chair only after being elected again.”
During his speech, Kejriwal alleged that the BJP had attempted to break AAP and undermine his leadership by sending him to jail. He accused the BJP of using tactics such as breaking parties and imprisoning leaders to form governments where they have lost elections. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March 2024, in connection with the Delhi excise policy case but was released on bail last week.
Responding to Kejriwal’s resignation announcement, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari dismissed the move as a “PR stunt,” claiming that Kejriwal’s reputation as an honest leader had diminished and likened his strategy to the “Sonia Gandhi model” of behind-the-scenes leadership.
