Van Driver’s Statement: What Happened That Night?

The van driver, who has now become a key witness, described his encounter with the accused:

  • While waiting on the road, he was approached by Falguni Ghosh, who asked him to come to her rented house in Birespalli, Madhyamgram.
  • The plan was to transport two women to Doltala, a short distance away.
  • Usually, the fare was ₹20 per person, but since they had a heavy trolley bag, the driver initially demanded ₹150.
  • After some negotiation, the fare was fixed at ₹130, which Falguni agreed to.

The real shock came when the driver helped lift the trolley bag onto the van. It was unusually heavy, making him curious about its contents.

  • When he asked what was inside, Falguni confidently replied that it contained “bronze utensils.”
  • Unaware of the crime, he dropped them at Doltala, collected his fare, and left.

Taxi Driver Also Deceived

After reaching Doltala, Falguni and her mother hired a taxi to take them to Ahiritola Ghat.

  • He received a similar response, that the bag contained metal utensils and food items.
  • He drove them to their destination without suspecting anything.

The entire truth was revealed later when the police arrested Falguni and her mother at Ahiritola Ghat, where they were caught trying to dispose of the body.

Motive: Property Dispute Behind the Murder

Police investigations indicate that the crime was likely driven by a property dispute. Sumita Ghosh, the victim, was Falguni’s paternal aunt-in-law (Pisi Shashuri), and there were ongoing conflicts over inheritance and assets.

  • On Tuesday morning, Falguni and her mother killed Sumita at their Madhyamgram residence.
  • They packed the body inside a trolley bag, severing the legs to fit it inside.
  • The plan was to dump the body in the river at Ahiritola Ghat.
