After 18 months in jail Anubrata Mondal was granted bail but faces a delay in his release
Anubrata Mondal, known as the ‘Tiger of Birbhum’, was set to return home after 18 months behind bars, but a legal hitch delayed his release from Tihar Jail on Monday. Although Mondal was granted bail by the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi last Friday, complications with the submission of legal documents prevented his release. As a result, Mondal will have to spend another night in jail, with hopes of returning to his home in Bolpur by Tuesday.

Mondal was arrested by the CBI on August 11, 2022, from his residence in Birbhum’s Nichupatti area in connection with the cattle smuggling case. Initially, he was held at Asansol Correctional Home before being transferred to Tihar Jail in March 2023. In November of the same year, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) also arrested him in connection with the same case, with his daughter Sukanya Mondal later being detained as well.
For his release, Mondal had to deposit a bond of ₹10 lakh. Though his daughter Sukanya had already secured bail, she remained in Delhi. Now, with Anubrata’s release, both father and daughter are expected to return together to their family home in Bolpur.
Despite previous setbacks, this latest legal development has paved the way for Anubrata Mondal’s long-awaited return to Birbhum just in time for the festive season.
