BJP MP and former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay is currently admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in South Kolkata. According to doctors, he is suffering from a severe infection known as Gastrointestinal Sepsis (GI Sepsis)—a life-threatening condition. His condition remains critical, and doctors have not declared him out of danger yet.
🔬 What Is GI Sepsis?
Sepsis is a critical medical condition caused when an infection triggers an extreme immune response in the body. Instead of fighting the infection, the immune system begins to attack the body’s own organs and tissues. If not treated promptly, it can lead to multiple organ failure—affecting the kidneys, heart, brain, and even causing death.
🧫 How Does It Occur?
According to Dr. Ranbir Bhowmik, a noted medicine specialist,
“If harmful bacteria enter the gastrointestinal tract, it can become extremely dangerous. GI Sepsis may also result from vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal infections.”
Gastroenterologist Dr. Pradipta Kumar Shetty adds,
“GI Sepsis is a sudden and aggressive infection that can rapidly push the body towards collapse. People with low immunity are at significantly higher risk.”
🧓 Why Is It Riskier for Abhijit Gangopadhyay?
At 63 years of age, age becomes a significant risk factor. Doctors believe that reduced immunity due to age may have worsened the impact of the infection in Gangopadhyay’s case.
⚠️ How to Stay Safe from GI Sepsis?
Doctors advise the following precautions to prevent such infections:
Avoid outside food and unsafe drinking water.
Think twice before consuming open fruits or street food.
Elderly individuals and those with chronic illnesses like diabetes or cancer should be extra cautious.
Consult a doctor immediately if you notice mild symptoms like nausea, abdominal pain, or fever.
Doctors warn that sepsis can become fatal within six hours. Therefore, early diagnosis and rapid treatment are key to survival.
🏥 Final Note
The health of Abhijit Gangopadhyay remains a matter of deep concern. The BJP is reportedly planning to airlift him to AIIMS Delhi for advanced treatment. As his medical team works around the clock, the nation watches with hope for his recovery.
