Monsoon Approaching Fast! How Far Is Bengal From Rainfall Relief?
Amid Heatwaves and Thunderstorms, Signs of Monsoon Bring Hope for Bengal Residents

Staff Reporter | Kolkata: Scorching heat, sudden thunderstorms, and unpredictable weather — that’s been the story across Bengal over the past few days. While parts of the state grapple with heatwaves, others are seeing thunderstorms and tragic weather-related incidents. Amid all this, the big question on everyone’s mind is — when will the monsoon arrive in Bengal?

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there’s good news on the horizon. The southwest monsoon has officially entered the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, marking the beginning of its journey toward mainland India — and eventually Bengal.

On May 13, the IMD confirmed that the southwest monsoon had advanced into: The Nicobar Islands, Parts of the South Andaman Sea, and The South Bay of Bengal.

Interestingly, the monsoon arrived five days earlier than its usual schedule in these regions. This early onset has raised hopes of a timely or even early monsoon for the rest of India, including Bengal.

Over the next 3 to 4 days, the monsoon is expected to move further into the central Bay of Bengal and more parts of the Andaman Islands — a sign that it’s progressing with good momentum this year.

Historically, the monsoon reaches Kerala by the first week of June, and then gradually moves northward. For West Bengal, monsoon typically arrives between June 15 and June 20.

If current patterns hold, Bengal could receive its first proper monsoon showers around the third week of June — potentially slightly earlier than usual.

🔥 Current Weather in Kolkata: Still Hot and Humid

Meanwhile, Kolkata is still in the grip of uncomfortable weather, with temperatures on Tuesday reaching:

Minimum: 28.8°C

Maximum: 35.2°C

Humidity levels ranged between 48% and 85%, making the atmosphere sticky and uncomfortable. IMD predicts that this hot and humid spell will last at least till Thursday.

The pace of this year’s southwest monsoon suggests it may reach Bengal neither slowly nor too late. While residents must endure a few more days of discomfort, the cool relief of monsoon showers seems just a few weeks away.
