Joint Initiative by National Citizens Committee and Anti-Discrimination Student Movement
Bangladesh is set to witness the emergence of a new political force as the National Citizens Party (NCP) is officially announced on Friday, March 1. The party is a joint initiative of the National Citizens Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The grand launch event will take place at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka at 3 PM, with a large public gathering expected, according to the organizers. Leaders from various like-minded political groups have also been invited to the event.
Key Leadership and Organizational Structure
The name and organizational structure of the National Citizens Party (NCP) were finalized during a meeting held on Thursday (February 29) at the central office of the National Citizens Committee in Banglamotor, Dhaka. Senior leaders from both the National Citizens Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement attended the meeting and finalized the names of key office bearers.
The key leadership positions of NCP include:
- Convener: Nahid Islam (Coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and former interim government advisor)
- General Secretary: Akhtar Hossain (Member Secretary of the National Citizens Committee)
- Chief Coordinator: Nasiruddin Patwari
- Senior Joint Convener: Samantha Sharmin
- Joint Coordinator: Abdul Hannan Masud
- Chief Organizer (Southern Region): Hasnat Abdullah
- Chief Organizer (Northern Region): Sarjis Alam
- Office Secretary: Salehuddin Sifat
Nasiruddin, who is currently the convener of the National Citizens Committee, Sarjis, the chief organizer, and Salehuddin, the co-spokesperson, will now assume significant roles within NCP. Meanwhile, Hasnat Abdullah and Abdul Hannan Masud, who were leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, will also hold key positions in the party.
Political Speculations: Is Muhammad Yunus Involved?
The emergence of NCP has sparked speculations in Bangladesh’s political landscape. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) previously claimed that Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the interim government, was planning to form a new political party. Following this claim, many observers believe that Yunus is behind the formation of NCP as well.
However, no direct or official connection between Yunus and the newly formed NCP has been disclosed yet. The party’s future political stance and role in Bangladesh’s governance remain uncertain.
Political Impact and Future Prospects
The launch of NCP marks a new chapter in Bangladesh’s political history. With a strong base in student activism and civil movements, the party is expected to bring fresh perspectives into national politics. Political analysts predict that NCP’s rise could lead to a reshaping of the country’s opposition dynamics.
Whether the National Citizens Party will gain widespread public support or remain a minor player in the political landscape remains to be seen. The coming months will be crucial in determining the party’s influence and political trajectory.
