In an unprecedented medical breakthrough, Kolkata witnessed its first inter-dog blood donation to save the life of a critically ill Doberman. Leo, a 10-month-old male pet dog owned by Satyajit Vidyarthi, was diagnosed with a severe blood disorder that caused his hemoglobin levels to plummet to a dangerous 3g/dL. Emergency blood transfusion became his only hope, and Coco, a 10-year-old female Golden Retriever owned by Rishikant Mukherjee, stepped in as the lifesaving donor. The procedure, followed by dialysis and chemotherapy, is being conducted at the cutting-edge Animal Health Pathological Lab, led by Pratip.
Leo’s Fight for Survival
Leo’s condition deteriorated rapidly, leaving veterinarians scrambling for a blood donor. A city-wide search led to Coco, whose blood type matched Leo’s requirements. Post-transfusion, Leo’s health showed gradual improvement, though he now requires dialysis and chemotherapy for full recovery. “Without Coco’s timely donation, Leo wouldn’t have survived,” shared Satyajit Vidyarthi, Leo’s owner.

The Animal Health Pathological Lab in Kolkata has emerged as a trailblazer in pet healthcare. Equipped with state-of-the-art machinery for dialysis, chemotherapy, and blood transfusions, the facility recently inaugurated its advanced unit, which Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh praised in an X (formerly Twitter) post. Ghosh wrote, “This lab is revolutionizing pet care. Seeing complex treatments like dialysis being offered here fills every pet lover with hope. Kudos to Pratip and his team!”
