120-135 km/h Winds Expected as Cyclone ‘Dana’ Threatens Coastal Areas; Puri-Bound and Other Long-Distance Trains Affected
In anticipation of Cyclone ‘Dana,’ which is expected to make landfall between Puri and Sagar Island with wind speeds ranging from 120 to 135 km/h, Southeastern Railways has initiated widespread train cancellations. Starting from Thursday, multiple trains have been halted as a precautionary measure.
Train Cancellations and Precautions
Cyclone ‘Dana’ is expected to hit late Thursday night or early Friday morning, prompting the cancellation of all trains bound for Puri. Southeastern Railways has canceled 85 long-distance trains from stations like Howrah, Shalimar, and Santragachi, and 93 down-bound trains will also be affected, including several superfast services. Notably, the Puri-bound Vande Bharat Express has been suspended due to the impending cyclone.
In addition to train cancellations, the railways are implementing several safety measures along coastal tracks. Eastern Railways’ Sealdah and Howrah divisions have also issued alerts, particularly for areas like Namkhana, Diamond Harbour, and Hasnabad.
Safety Measures Along Railway Lines
To prevent the rolling of trains during the cyclone, car sheds are securing train wheels with locks and “gutka” under the wheels. The engineering department is assessing the condition of vulnerable river bridges, and emergency control rooms will be operational on Thursday and Friday to monitor the situation closely.
Railway stations in coastal areas will have engineering and signal department teams on standby, while diesel-powered engines will be stationed at high-risk stations, ready to tow any train that encounters mechanical failure. Pumps are being set up in areas prone to waterlogging to prevent flooding of tracks.
Additional Alerts and Emergency Measures
All railway stations will continuously update passengers about train operations and weather conditions. Southeastern Railways is preparing for emergency situations to ensure the safety of passengers, employees, and infrastructure during the cyclone.
