Heavy rainfall triggers multiple landslides across Darjeeling, disrupting life and claiming one life as festive season approaches. Darjeeling has been severely affected by continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours, just ahead of the festive season. The district has witnessed widespread landslides, resulting in significant damage and the tragic death of an elderly resident. As the festive season draws near, Darjeeling, often referred to as the “Queen of the Hills,” is facing major disruptions.
According to local sources and administrative reports, the deceased has been identified as Raghuvir Rai, a 78-year-old resident of Sukhia block. The incident occurred in the early hours of the day when heavy rains triggered a landslide in Bujua village, located in the Plungdung Gram Panchayat under the Sukhia block. Raghuvir was inside his home when the landslide struck, leading to his untimely death. Upon receiving the news, the Block Development Officer (BDO) and Officer-in-Charge (OC) rushed to the scene. The administration has extended financial support to the victim’s family, offering condolences and assistance in their time of need.
Massive Damage Across Darjeeling District
Throughout Wednesday, heavy rainfall continued to batter the hills of Darjeeling, causing widespread destruction. Numerous roads have been blocked due to landslides, severely hampering transportation in the region. National Highway 10, which serves as a major route, has been shut down. Roads leading to popular tourist destinations like Rock Garden have also been closed, along with the route to Darjeeling via Rimbik. The area around Singtam Chikmane has suffered the most damage.
This series of natural disasters comes just before the Puja festivities, adding to the challenges faced by both residents and authorities. Darjeeling is typically a top tourist destination during the festive season, attracting a large influx of visitors. However, the ongoing rain and landslides have raised concerns about whether tourists will still flock to the hills as expected.
Tourism and Festivities at Risk
The timing of the calamity couldn’t be worse for Darjeeling’s tourism sector, which heavily relies on the Puja season to boost local businesses. With landslides blocking major roads and the weather showing no signs of improvement, there is growing uncertainty about whether the anticipated influx of tourists will materialize. Hoteliers and local shop owners, who were preparing for a busy season, now face the possibility of a significant financial loss due to the adverse conditions.
The administration is working tirelessly to clear the blocked roads and ensure the safety of the residents. Rescue and relief operations are in full swing, with teams dispatched to assess the damage and offer support. Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and avoid areas prone to further landslides.
Despite the efforts, the road to recovery appears challenging as heavy rains are forecasted to continue, which could trigger more landslides. The administration is keeping a close watch on the situation and has requested that tourists postpone their travel plans until the conditions improve.
The continuous rainfall and landslides have cast a shadow over the festive spirit in Darjeeling. As rescue efforts continue, the hills are grappling with widespread damage, blocked roads, and a tragic loss of life. With the safety of both residents and tourists being a priority, Darjeeling’s recovery from this natural calamity remains uncertain as the region hopes for relief from the relentless rains.
